I tested this functionality on the 13/06/2015 and it was working fine.

Today I tested again this functionality and it’s not working anymore:

• With Microsoft edge, Microsoft internet explorer and Firefox it’s possible to see the input from the webcam but it’s not possible to capture the video
• With google Chrome it’s not possible to see the input from the webcam.

I’ve investigated a little bit more to understand why getUserMedia is not working anymore and I’ve seen the below message

GetUserMedia is only available on HTTPS, which is HTTP with an encryption of the data using asymmetric keys

My website works on HTTP so getUserMedia is no longer working on my page.

Making a website which uses HTTP protocol means getting a certificate and a couple public-key and private key:

• the public key is sent automatically to all client browsers from the server
• the private key is secret.
• The certificate is a proof that a HTTPS website is secure

When the user connects to a website on HTTPS it obtains the certificate and it can accept to connect to this website.

After accepting it obtains the public key and it can communicate in a secure way with the server

1. the client encrypts its message using the server public key and sends it to the server
2. the server decrypts the message using its private key,
3. the server processes the data and he got the response
4. the server encrypts the response using its private key
5. the client decrypts the response using the server public key

My website doesn’t require this complex and expensive technology and I won’t make working that project which will be shown in my webpage even if it’s not working.

Nothing changes from my side but I’ve understood that getusermedia is working only through HTTPS

Every applications that runs on your computer are virtually dangerous, every applications can violate your privacy, when you download a windows application (with exe extension) and execute it, this application can damage your computer for the same way a jar file or apk Android application etc.

Internet applications are different from the applets because the application runs on server and can damage server file system not your computer.

Not all internet applications run on computer server, there are some application that runs on your computer, for example javascript code, jquery, flash but these script are safety because work only with your browser and don’t have an access of your file system.

Applet is different because it is jar archive that runs on your machine and shows the User Interface on your browser, it is not a web application but it is a java application that uses your browser only to load the UI.

I written a simple applet to encrypt/decrypt text with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm, this is used also in encryptable notepad.

The operation necessaries for loading my applet on your PC are written below:

• you have to enable popup and java applets on your computer
• you have to update the version of Java Virtual Machine emulated by your browser
• you have to allow my website to execute applet. On windows computer you have to connect clicking on “Control Panel”-> java ->security.  and then you have to write “www.rizzimichele.it” in the table below

The security warning shows that an applet performs a unknown operation on your computer, this is normal because it reads the key text, reads the document and encrypts it with AES algorithm

This software is developed by me from a simple notepad shared by oracle (official source) my activity was adding the part of the encoding of text by using two symmetric encoding algorithms (DES).

If you want to encode text, you can follow these steps:

1. click on showCryptBox
2. select encoding, insert code and press ok

the encoded text is saved in the same folder where you have saved the original file or it is in the folder of the jar file DocumentEditor.jar

This file has the name of your original file and the tail .key

To encode text is enough to click to file->open and click to decode button, then you can open the file and choose the encoding algorithm and insert the code.

The libraries used to make this software are Java AWT, SWING and the standard crypto lib.

• The user space is the space of the central memory (RAM memory) where are loaded all applications opened by the logged user.
• The kernel space is the space of RAM memory forbidden to the users, this space contains all processes executed by the machine, the drivers of the devices and all the information necessary to run the computer.
• Master boot record (MBR) is the Sector of the hard disk with all information necessary to start the computer.

A simple operating system needs the following components to run:

• Memory manager: this is the manager of the RAM memory (which is the place where the OS stores the executing programs). This manager decides which application stores on RAM memory for how much time and what is its priority, because, RAM memory contains the data, the instructions, and the information for loading the operating system. The RAM memory is about 16 GB, the hard disk is about 2 TB so the RAM cannot contain all files, applications stored in the hard disk. The RAM has a subset of application which have been being executed now. The Memory manager loads in RAM memory only the information necessary for executing the software during the limited time necessary to perform the operation they want to do.
• File System: contains all information stored on mass memory (for example hard disk, pen drive, cd rom etc). All files are not stored continuously on hard disk  but are split in many small parts on relations of the size of the Sector of the hard disk. Each part of the file is stored in a different Sector of the hard disk. The file system contains the rule to decide where the operating system should store the file and the way to recover it. For example in NTFS file system a directory is a simple file that contains the pointer to the first sector of the file and at the block that point at the next 64  sectors etc.
• Process manager: it manages all the processes in execution, each process has the instructions (that are stored in ram memory) the data, for example variables, necessary to run it (stored in ram memory), opened files (stored in ram memory or in the hard disk), the time of the execution of them, the state (wait, ready, execute). This component manages the occupation of CPU because one process cannot use it for a long time.
• Device driver offers to the operating system the interface to communicate with the hardware
• API: it is the interface that uses the other software for communicate with the operative system. it is a very important component because if it is easy to develop an application for the operating system there would be lot of applications written for it and the software become popular.
• User interface: is the mask that hides all the internal structure of the software and makes easy to use of the operating system.

The operating system is a very complex software because it is able to manage every device of the computer: RAM, CPU, Processes, Hard disks, it hides the hardware of the machine, and offers a lot of functionality to the software developer called API.

The operating system is necessary to make working computers, network components (for example routers or switches), smartphone, smart tv, robots, programmable calculators etc.
